Guy: No Child Should Miss Out on Sport Due to Costs

by Kaia

A recent study by Ulster University, presented today at Stormont (29 May), reveals significant financial barriers preventing children from participating in sports and physical activities. According to the research, 30% of parents reported being unable to afford the necessary equipment and clothing for their children, while 37% said their children had missed out on sports activities due to the cost.

Ms. Guy, who commented on the findings, said: “The cost of living continues to have a major impact on families, and while this research may not be surprising, the statistics and parents’ testimonies are concerning.”

She emphasized the broader problem of insufficient physical activity among children. “Only 21% of primary school pupils and 16% of secondary school students meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity,” she said.

Ms. Guy stressed that physical activity should be a priority for all departments, noting its clear links to positive health outcomes such as reduced risk of obesity and depression, along with better cognitive abilities and academic performance. She added, “Sports participation also offers children valuable life lessons, including perseverance and teamwork.”

However, the study also highlighted a growing disparity in access to sports, largely driven by income. The cost of necessary sports equipment and clothing was a significant barrier. Ms. Guy called for the Education Minister to address these issues, particularly through the School Uniforms Bill, which aims to ease the financial burden on families.

“No child should be excluded from sports or physical activities because of the cost of school uniforms or PE kits,” she said. “The Education Minister must take action on this report and consider the recommendations for supporting families.”
