by Kaia

May is recognized worldwide as Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission is joining global efforts to highlight the theme: “Turn Awareness Into Action.”

Mental health remains a critical, yet often overlooked, public health issue in the OECS. Ongoing challenges, such as limited mental health services, policy gaps, and societal stigma, have hindered progress. As a result, many voices have gone unheard. This year’s observance goes beyond reflection; it is a call to action.

The theme, “Turn Awareness Into Action,” encourages individuals and communities to move past mere recognition and engage in open discussions, build supportive communities, and prioritize mental wellness. It calls for the removal of the stigma surrounding mental health and the creation of environments where these issues can be openly addressed.

In support of this regional initiative, the OECS Commission is urging people to wear green on May 30 as a symbol of solidarity with those affected by mental health challenges. Green stands for hope, strength, and renewal—values that are central to this campaign. People are also encouraged to share photos of themselves wearing green on social media using the hashtag #OECSMentalHealth.

“Recognizing mental health as an essential part of overall well-being is not just a health concern—it is a social one,” said Dr. Roxanne Brizan-St. Martin, Programme Director of Health, Social Inclusion, and Social Protection at the OECS Commission. “This month, we are amplifying awareness and calling for action.”

This year’s campaign highlights the 5 Cs of Mental Wellness:

  • Connection – building community through shared experiences
  • Coping – promoting healthy strategies for emotional resilience
  • Calmness – prioritizing mental peace and mindfulness
  • Care – offering empathy and active support to others
  • Compassion – creating safe, inclusive spaces with kindness

The OECS Commission encourages individuals, civil society, and both public and private sectors to embrace these principles by:

  • Strengthening community bonds through shared stories and mutual understanding;
  • Reinforcing solidarity through consistent care and support;
  • Practicing empathy by valuing diverse experiences and committing to continuous learning.

By turning awareness into action, we can change attitudes, reduce stigma, and build a culture that values mental health just as much as physical health.

Let’s act, listen, and support—because mental health matters.
