Kolkata has recorded seven new COVID-19 cases in the past week, increasing West Bengal’s total active cases to 10. Among these, six patients are currently hospitalised, receiving treatment for COVID-19 along with other health conditions.

Health officials are closely watching the situation as the new infections emerge. The six hospitalised patients are being treated at a facility near the Bypass area. They were admitted for various health issues, and COVID-19 tests were conducted after they showed mild to severe symptoms. One notable case is a 70-year-old man with existing heart problems who tested positive for the virus during treatment.

Initially, this patient required BiPAP support but has since improved and now needs only one litre of oxygen per hour. Apollo ECMO physician Dr. Arpan Chakraborty said, “His condition is improving. Since he has other health issues, COVID-19 is not the main cause of his condition.”

Earlier reports on Sunday mentioned four active cases, including a 15-year-old boy and a pregnant woman. Two other cases involved family members from Mograhat, who did not need hospital care.

Experts Respond to the Increase

Medical experts say the rise in cases is not alarming. Infectious diseases specialist Dr. Sayan Chakraborty said, “Spikes in cases happen occasionally. There is no need to panic unless many severe infections occur. However, it is wise to continue preventive measures like wearing masks and using hand sanitiser.”

Pulmonologist and former COVID nodal officer Dr. Kausik Chaudhuri identified the Omicron sub-variant JN.1 as the cause of the recent increase. He stressed the need to protect vulnerable groups, adding, “People showing symptoms or those with other illnesses should take precautions.”

Health Guidelines and Public Assurance

Despite the case rise, health officials have not issued new COVID guidelines. Critical care specialist Dr. Soutik Panda noted, “The situation is not alarming now, but issuing guidelines could help raise public awareness.”

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim reassured residents, saying, “West Bengal has not yet needed to issue new COVID SOPs. We are monitoring the situation closely. There is no reason to panic.”

As of May 19, the state had only one active case. Authorities urge everyone to stay vigilant and follow basic safety measures as the situation evolves.
