National Health Commission Sets High Expectations for Hong Kong

HONG KONG — A top health official from Beijing said Monday he has strong confidence in the future of Hong Kong’s healthcare sector and hopes the city will play a larger role in global health efforts.

Cao Xuetao, vice minister of the National Health Commission, made the remarks at the opening of the Hospital Authority Convention 2025 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Cao encouraged Hong Kong to take part in global health governance, especially at a time when international cooperation is under pressure.

“The world is going through fast and complex changes. Many countries are turning to unilateral actions, which makes global health cooperation more difficult,” he said.

He added that China remains committed to multilateralism and will continue to expand its role in global health.

Cao said the National Health Commission is ready to support Hong Kong’s healthcare professionals and organizations as they join national medical missions abroad and contribute to the Health Silk Road initiative.

He also called for stronger partnerships between Hong Kong and the mainland in professional healthcare fields.

Cao reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the Hong Kong SAR government in managing public health and promoting its involvement in building a healthier nation and the Greater Bay Area.
