Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance in Solomon Islands with the One Health Approach

by Kaia

The Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has taken a critical step in addressing the growing public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by organizing a workshop through its One Health Coordination Committee. The initiative focuses on protecting the health of Solomon Islanders by addressing the challenges posed by AMR through a comprehensive, multisectoral approach.

Understanding AMR

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the effects of medications, making infections harder to treat. This development increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. As a result, AMR is not only a health issue but also an economic burden. By 2030, it is projected to cost the global economy an additional US$700 billion, with low-income nations facing the greatest impact. In the Western Pacific region, which includes the Solomon Islands, AMR-related deaths are expected to reach 5.2 million by 2030.

Dr. Nemia Bainivalu, a senior official from the Ministry of Health, emphasized the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, stating that misuse of antimicrobials in any sector can have far-reaching consequences.

One Health Approach

The One Health approach, central to the workshop, recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The concept aims to optimize health outcomes across these sectors by fostering cooperation among all stakeholders.

The workshop served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss AMR-related issues, including food safety and zoonotic diseases, and identify critical areas for improvement. Participants were encouraged to think about AMR’s broader implications and explore ways to strengthen coordination and response mechanisms.

Solomon Islands’ National Strategy

The Solomon Islands Government has recognized AMR as a priority in its National Strategic Health Plan for 2023-2026. The government is focused on tackling AMR to safeguard the progress made in healthcare and to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, a recent Joint External Evaluation (JEE) by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted significant gaps, including limited cross-sectoral awareness, a lack of coordination, and insufficient legislative frameworks.

To address these issues, the government is working on implementing the Multisectoral National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) for 2023-2026. Key priorities include strengthening surveillance systems, enhancing antimicrobial stewardship, and improving stakeholder coordination.

Global Efforts Against AMR

Globally, AMR is recognized as one of the most pressing health threats. In 2019, the WHO endorsed a framework to accelerate the fight against AMR in the Western Pacific Region. This framework aims to slow the emergence of AMR and mitigate its impact on health systems and economies.

Furthermore, in 2024, world leaders committed to a political declaration to intensify efforts to combat AMR. This declaration underscores the importance of national responsibility in achieving universal health coverage and addressing AMR through tailored, context-specific strategies.

In line with these global efforts, the WHO is updating its Global Action Plan (GAP) on AMR, aiming for a 10% reduction in global deaths associated with bacterial AMR by 2030. The revised GAP will guide countries over the next decade to achieve the targets set during the United Nations High-Level Meeting on AMR.

Looking Ahead

The Solomon Islands’ commitment to tackling AMR highlights the need for a coordinated, One Health approach that involves all sectors of society. As AMR continues to pose a significant global health threat, ongoing collaboration and action at both the national and international levels are critical in safeguarding public health for future generations.
