Health Authorities Advise Moderation When Eating Zongzi

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, health authorities are urging the public to consume zongzi (粽子), a traditional glutinous rice dish wrapped in bamboo leaves, in moderation and with healthier ingredients.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare cautioned that zongzi is often high in calories and lacks essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which could negatively impact health. During a news conference, the ministry highlighted concerns over the dietary habits of Taiwanese citizens, citing a study conducted between 2018 and 2022. The study found that 71% of adults over the age of 19 were consuming excessive amounts of salt, while 17.2% exceeded recommended sugar intake.

The research also revealed that 88.5% of Taiwanese were not eating enough fruits, 98% were not getting enough dairy, and 87.9% were falling short on seeds and nuts.

To improve the nutritional value of zongzi, Health Promotion Agency (HPA) Deputy Director-General Chia Shu-li suggested incorporating more vegetables into the dish. HPA official Chin Yi-hua added that most commercially available zongzi contain excessive sodium, salt, and sugar, while lacking in fruits and vegetables.

For a healthier alternative, Chin recommended choosing zongzi with lighter flavors, opting for versions made with whole grains, and limiting consumption to one serving per meal or sharing a portion with someone. He also advised using soy glaze, honey, and other dipping sauces sparingly.

Consumers are also encouraged to check product labels for quality certifications and expiration dates when buying sauces and dips. Food and Drug Administration Deputy Director-General Lin Chin-fu reminded people to inspect packaging for any damage and to use clean, dry utensils when scooping sauces to maintain their freshness. Once opened, sauces should be refrigerated and used promptly to ensure safety.

By making these small adjustments, individuals can enjoy zongzi while better supporting their overall health during the festive season.
