A new COVID-19 subvariant, NB.1.8.1, is emerging in New South Wales and Western Australia, prompting concern from health officials as the country heads into the colder months.

The latest NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report shows overall COVID-19 and flu levels remain low, but infection rates are beginning to rise. In the week ending May 17, the state’s COVID-19 test positivity rate reached 5.7%.

The report notes that NB.1.8.1 is now increasing in NSW. Wastewater testing in Perth also confirms a surge in the subvariant in Western Australia.

Although NB.1.8.1 does not appear to cause more severe illness than earlier strains, its rapid spread is being watched closely. The World Health Organization has reported rising global cases, including in Hong Kong, where hospitalisations are at a 12-month high, and in parts of the United States.

NSW Health is monitoring the variant, especially among ICU patients, to detect any signs of increased severity. So far, the subvariant seems more transmissible but not more dangerous.

Vaccines remain effective at preventing serious illness from NB.1.8.1. Health authorities are urging Australians to stay up to date with COVID-19 boosters and flu vaccines.

Meanwhile, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continues to circulate at high levels in both NSW and WA, particularly among children.

WA Health has also warned of an early flu season, with over 6,500 cases already recorded this year. Free flu and RSV vaccines are available to eligible residents until June 30.

Authorities are reminding the public to practise good hygiene, stay home if sick, and keep vaccinations current to help reduce hospital pressure during winter.
