Carlisle will host a special football tournament this summer to promote mental health awareness, inclusion, and community spirit.
The CRFM Mental Health Matters Cup is scheduled for July 27 at Harraby 3G, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The six-a-side tournament is open to players aged 16 and over, regardless of gender or skill level, as long as they are medically fit to participate.
Organisers say the event welcomes everyone, whether they want to play, volunteer, or simply show up to support the teams and enjoy the atmosphere.
Warren Thompson, one of the original organisers and now a presenter on CRFM’s Mental Health Matters radio show, said the tournament builds on the legacy of The Isles Cup, a previous mental health football initiative he started while working at the Carleton Clinic.
“Many years ago we built something really special with The Isles Cup,” Thompson said. “It brought people together, broke down barriers, and showed how powerful football can be. I’m proud to help bring that spirit back with the CRFM Mental Health Matters Cup – it’s for everyone.”
The Isles Cup had drawn teams from across England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, using football to promote inclusion and challenge issues like racism, sexism, and ageism. That event relied heavily on community support, including volunteer referees, scorekeepers, and partnerships with the Cumberland FA, NHS, and local media.
This year’s tournament hopes to recapture that same energy. Carlisle’s community radio station, CRFM, is helping to promote the event and its message. Alongside the matches, the day will include music, refreshments, and an awards ceremony.
Organisers hope the CRFM Mental Health Matters Cup will become an annual event, using sport as a way to bring people together and raise awareness about mental health.
