Tim Blumentritt, a social worker, emphasized the importance of mental health awareness during the event. “Across the country, May is dedicated to mental health awareness, and here in our community, this event brings together both professionals and individuals receiving mental health services to show that mental health matters,” he said.

Kathleen Jensen, founder of The Little Heart Project, also spoke at the event. The project aims to spread love and support through crocheted hearts for those in need. Jensen believes the walk is an important show of solidarity for those struggling with mental health issues. “Many people who struggle with mental health feel isolated, but here we are, 150 to 200 people strong. You’re not alone,” she said. “It’s hard to reach out when you’re struggling with depression or thoughts of suicide, and we want to reach people before they get to that point.”

Jensen noted that participation in the walk has grown over the years. “The increase in participants shows that more people are talking about mental health, which is key to removing the stigma. Talking about it is the first step, but it takes courage to share your struggles,” she added.

Local officials agree that conversations around mental health benefit the entire community. “Talking about mental health is something I’m passionate about. It’s a win for everyone,” said Blumentritt. “The energy here today is inspiring, and events like this help create positive change.”

The event also saw participation from county workers, the La Crosse Police Department, and local organizations such as Great Rivers 211 and United Way.
