Wales Unveils 10-Year Mental Health Overhaul: New Strategy Targets Stigma and Inequality

by jingji31

The Welsh Government has launched a new 10-year Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy—the first major update in 12 years. A delivery plan, explaining how the goals will be achieved, was also published.

Mind Cymru, a leading mental health charity, had urged the government to clarify how the strategy would be implemented and monitored. Earlier this year, the charity gathered feedback from people with lived experience of mental health problems across Wales and shared its findings during the government’s consultation.

Simon Jones, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Mind Cymru, said:

“This strategy is a crucial step forward for Wales. More people than ever need mental health support, while poverty, inequality, and long waiting times are worsening the crisis.

“The focus on fighting stigma, reducing inequalities, offering earlier help, and working with charities aligns with what people told us they needed. Now, we need strong leadership, urgent action, and long-term funding to turn these promises into reality.

“We need a mental health system that works for everyone—regardless of background or location. Lived experience must drive change, and support must reach those who need it most, including people in poverty, young people, and racialised communities.

“This is a pivotal opportunity. If done right, this strategy could transform mental health care in Wales. We’ll keep pushing for progress, holding leaders accountable, and advocating for those who need help.”
