The mental health charity Mind has called for major changes to the benefits system after giving evidence to a government committee. The group warned that people with mental health problems face unique challenges when dealing with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
A new report highlights serious concerns about safeguarding failures. Key recommendations include:
Learning from past mistakes to prevent future harm or deaths among claimants.
Introducing a legal duty to protect vulnerable claimants, with the Secretary of State held accountable.
Creating an expert reference group with input from people who have lived experience of the benefits system.
Minesh Patel, Mind’s Associate Director of Policy and Influencing, responded:
“No one should face harm because of the benefits system. Yet this report shows the government is failing to protect people, especially those with mental health problems.
“Many tell us the system causes them extreme stress and worsens their mental health. While the government says it’s reviewing safeguards, real reform is needed—not benefit cuts that push people into poverty.”
The charity insists that urgent action is required to ensure vulnerable claimants receive proper support.
