At Motorsport UK, we recognize that the mental and physical wellbeing of our community is vital for everyone to enjoy motorsport safely and with fun. Mental health encompasses how a person thinks, feels, and handles life’s challenges, and we understand that looking after mental health is just as important as ensuring physical health.
In motorsport, safety is often thought of in terms of vehicles, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE). However, it is equally crucial that we consider the mental health of everyone involved in the sport, from competitors to volunteers. Mental wellbeing is fundamental to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
Everyone Has a Role in Supporting Wellbeing
In motorsport, we believe that every individual has a responsibility to support both their own mental wellbeing and that of others, whether on or off the track. This collective approach helps ensure that the benefits of motorsport can be experienced by all participants in a positive way.
Supporting Mental Health with Every Mind Matters
Motorsport UK is a proud supporter of Every Mind Matters, a public health campaign launched by Public Health England (PHE) in partnership with the NHS. The campaign encourages individuals to take steps to prepare for life’s challenges, offering an online platform where people can create a personalized action plan. This plan recommends self-care actions to manage stress, improve sleep, boost mood, and feel in control of their lives. It’s a great resource for anyone looking to improve their mental wellbeing.
Dedicated Safeguarding Team for Mental Health Support
Motorsport UK also has a dedicated Safeguarding team that focuses on supporting mental health and wellbeing. Vickie Lewis, Head of Safeguarding, shared the team’s commitment to ensuring a positive experience in the sport. She explained that motorsport can have a profound impact on an individual’s mental wellbeing—participation can reduce stress, enhance mood, and foster emotional health through physical activity and social interaction. However, there are also situations that can negatively affect mental health.
To support the community, the Safeguarding team offers signposting and support to members facing poor mental health and wellbeing, ensuring that everyone feels supported.
Support for All Ages and Roles
Motorsport UK provides tailored advice and guidance to help those new to the sport, including young adults and parents. They ensure that children are kept safe during training and competition and offer assistance to adult members, including competitors, officials, and volunteers. This comprehensive approach helps everyone feel confident and secure in their involvement with motorsport, both mentally and physically.
In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week, Motorsport UK continues to emphasize the importance of wellbeing for all members of the motorsport community, ensuring that the sport remains a safe and enjoyable pursuit for everyone involved.
