The Gippsland Regional Training Hub recently hosted an inspiring Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day event, bringing together Latrobe Regional Health and Monash Rural Health staff and students to promote mental health awareness within the medical profession.
Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day is an initiative aimed at breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health in medicine. The event encourages open conversations about the mental health challenges healthcare professionals face in balancing their personal well-being with the high demands of their profession. Participants proudly wore vibrant, eccentric socks, or received a pair on-site, as a symbol of solidarity and support for mental health advocacy.
In addition to the colorful display, attendees participated in a powerful session led by Dr. Patrick Johnson from the Victorian Doctors Health Program. Dr. Johnson’s presentation covered key mental health challenges faced by doctors and medical students, along with strategies for building resilience and maintaining well-being within the demanding field of healthcare.
“Supporting mental health in the medical profession is critical,” said Dr. Johnson. “Events like Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day provide an opportunity for doctors and students to openly discuss their struggles, reduce stigma, and encourage seeking help. Mental well-being should always be a priority, not a secondary concern.”
Associate Professor Robert Dawson, Director of the Gippsland Regional Training Hub, reflected on the impact of such events, emphasizing the immense pressures faced by medical professionals. “Initiatives like Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day play a vital role in fostering a culture of support and awareness. By bringing healthcare staff and students together, we reinforce the message that no one is alone in their mental health journey.”
Through such engaging events, the medical community continues to push for better understanding and support for mental health, ensuring that healthcare professionals can thrive both personally and professionally.
