The Economic Impact of Healthy Hospitals in South Carolina

by Kaia

Hospitals are often viewed as critical health care providers, offering 24/7 services to those in need. However, their economic contributions go far beyond just healthcare. According to a new report from the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA), state hospitals generate a remarkable $36.75 billion in total economic impact, encompassing both direct hospital activities and the broader effects these activities have on local communities.

The report, released in conjunction with National Hospital Week (May 11-17), highlights the significant role hospitals play in the workforce. They are responsible for more than 203,000 jobs in South Carolina, contributing approximately $13 billion in labor income. The healthcare and social assistance sector is South Carolina’s largest employer, accounting for 13.2% of the state’s workforce. Each hospital job is linked to another in the local economy, demonstrating the far-reaching economic benefits hospitals provide.

Hospitals in South Carolina contribute to far more than just the local economy. In 2024, the state’s hospitals delivered critical services, including the birth of 51,309 babies, providing care to 1.9 million patients, and responding to 2.3 million emergency visits. The widespread reach of these services underscores the fundamental role hospitals play in the lives of all South Carolinians.

The message is clear: Healthy hospitals are crucial to a thriving economy. With the state’s population continuing to grow and age, the economic impact of hospitals is only expected to increase. This impact is stable and predictable, offering a strong foundation for long-term economic growth.

As the chair of the SCHA board, I acknowledge the many partners who support the state’s hospitals, including local and state leaders, public health agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations. Their collaborative efforts help ensure that hospitals remain robust and continue to meet the health needs of residents.

However, current discussions in Congress regarding a proposed $880 billion cut to Medicaid reimbursement raise concerns for South Carolina’s hospitals. Medicaid covers 20% of residents and provides health insurance for 60% of the state’s children. Cuts to Medicaid funding could directly impact the services hospitals provide and, in turn, the state’s economic prosperity.

As policymakers weigh these cuts, we urge them to consider the jobs, investments, and life-saving services hospitals deliver. With continued public support, smart government policies, and a strong workforce pipeline, South Carolina can rely on its hospitals to foster better health, improve quality of life, and drive economic growth for decades to come.
