Mental health issues affect one in five adults in the United States, including conditions like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. These challenges are universal, cutting across age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. Yet, despite their prevalence, many individuals struggle to seek the support they need.
May, designated as Mental Health Awareness Month since 1949, serves as a crucial period for combating the stigma surrounding mental health. The month encourages open dialogue, raises awareness, and educates communities on the importance of mental health. The goal is to remind individuals that they are not alone in their struggles and that help is accessible.
At the University of Kentucky, a wide array of mental health resources is available to students and staff. These services include telehealth options and access to therapists and mental health professionals.
Rhonda Henry, LCSW, a mental health therapist at UK Human Resources Health and Wellness, emphasized the importance of overcoming the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help. “Stigma doesn’t just silence individuals, it convinces them their pain doesn’t warrant attention,” Henry explained. “Seeking support may feel selfish or embarrassing, but it’s often the first step toward making meaningful, positive changes in one’s life.”
The role of family, friends, and coworkers is critical in supporting those affected by mental health conditions. Understanding the impact of these challenges on everyday life enables loved ones to provide the necessary support and encouragement.
Melissa Frederick, vice president and chief human resources officer at UK, noted that promoting mental wellness is a key priority for the institution. “We are dedicated to the well-being of our employees and their families,” she said. “We urge supervisors to recognize and address the mental health needs of their teams, ensuring they are aware of available resources.”
To further promote mental health awareness, UK HR Health and Wellness will host several events throughout the month of May.
