German Footballer Linda Magull Opens Up About Her Mental Health Battle

by Kaia

Inter Milan midfielder Linda Magull has opened up about her struggle with depression, revealing that a year after hitting rock bottom, she now feels much better and is content. In a candid conversation on the “Wie geht’s?” podcast with host Robin Gosens, Magull shared that both professional and personal challenges led to her mental health crisis, which peaked last summer.

Magull, who had reached the height of her career by helping Germany win silver at the 2022 Euros, found herself in a dark place after Germany’s early exit from the 2023 World Cup. Simultaneously, she experienced a decline in her role at Bayern Munich, where she was becoming less central to the team. Personal relationship issues only added to her struggles.

Reflecting on that time, Magull admitted, “I wouldn’t have had a problem with dying.” She described feeling lost and confused, unsure of how to move forward in her life.

Her move to Inter Milan in January 2024, in an attempt to escape the negativity, only worsened her mental state. “I fled Munich, but after a few weeks, I missed it terribly. I thought I’d lost everything,” she said. She began experiencing panic attacks and severe anxiety, which prompted her to question, “What’s wrong with me?”

By the summer of 2024, Magull made the difficult decision to seek professional help, opting for treatment at a private clinic. “My thoughts had become so out of control that I no longer saw any meaning in life,” she said. After six weeks of therapy, she returned to Inter Milan, having regained her passion for both football and life.

Magull credited therapy for helping her reclaim her identity, saying, “The depression took over my personality. You need treatment, you need therapy.” She added that the decision to seek help was the proudest moment of her career, even surpassing her achievements on the field. “No matter what or how many titles I’ve won, I’m proud that I went to the private clinic, but especially how I left,” she said.

Looking ahead, Magull announced her retirement from the German national team in March 2025, with 77 caps and 22 goals to her name. She aims to focus more on club football and personal pursuits. Now, she is excited about the upcoming season with Inter Milan, as the team prepares for their first-ever Champions League campaign.
