Hyderabad’s Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Erragadda reported a severe outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting on Tuesday, affecting over 90 patients. One patient died, and dozens were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning.
The incident began early Tuesday morning with 15 patients showing symptoms. By evening, the number of affected patients rose to 60-70. The patients suffered from acute gastroenteritis after consuming contaminated food on June 2, officials said.
Among those who fell ill was a patient named Karan, admitted for mental health treatment. He collapsed during the outbreak, and despite CPR efforts, he died after being moved to Osmania General Hospital. Eighteen patients were transferred to the hospital for advanced care.
In response, the Telangana government took swift action. The Superintendent of IMH terminated the contract of the diet contractor, G Jaipal Reddy, citing “gross negligence” and a serious breach of contract.
Hyderabad District Collector Anudeep Durishetty confirmed the outbreak. He said, “On Tuesday morning, 15 patients at the mental health institute reported diarrhea and vomiting. Our health team started treatment immediately. Sadly, one patient, Karan, collapsed and later died despite medical efforts. By evening, 60-70 more patients showed similar symptoms. All patients are now under observation and receiving treatment.”
Telangana Medical and Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha visited the affected patients at the institute. He expressed his condolences and assured that measures are underway to prevent such incidents in the future.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the minister said, “We have removed the hospital diet contractor and are providing better treatment to the patients. The health condition of all affected individuals is stable.”
