The delegation included representatives from 10 European companies across seven member states—Spain, Austria, France, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, and Ireland—and was led by Ambassadors Rene Van Nes (Spain), Cristina Perez (Sweden), Anders Bengcten (Sweden), and French Chargé Jean-Jacques Forté. This “Team Europe” group aimed to identify investment opportunities in Guyana’s growing health and pharmaceutical sectors, key elements of the nation’s development strategy.

Though relatively unknown outside the Caribbean, Guyana is emerging as a major oil producer and is now pursuing a bold transformation in healthcare. The government is investing heavily in upgrading 13 hospitals and developing its pharmaceutical industry.

This mission highlights the EU’s strategic focus on Guyana within its Global Gateway initiative, which links economic growth, public health, and innovation. The EU is already partnering with Lithuania’s regulatory agency to strengthen Guyana’s pharma regulations, helping the sector meet international standards and attract investors.

Additionally, the EU will back Guyana’s plan to establish a biopark in collaboration with Belgium’s award-winning Charleroi biopark. This facility will promote innovation and create a sustainable ecosystem by connecting companies, research centers, and healthcare innovators.

This initial mission marks the start of deeper EU-Guyana cooperation. Plans are underway for future investment missions to Europe, offering Guyanese stakeholders greater access to European markets and collaboration opportunities.
