DENVER — The City of Denver is celebrating the halfway mark of its 10-year Healthy Food for Denver’s Kids initiative, which has already made a significant impact on the lives of local families.
Since launching in 2019, the program has invested over $85 million into more than 100 local organizations to improve access to nutritious food and food-based education for children and their families.
“Every child and family deserves the chance to access affordable, nutritious food,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston in a statement.
Approved by voters in 2018, the initiative is funded through 2029. It aims to increase food equity by supporting schools, nonprofits, and public agencies focused on nutrition, food justice, and youth empowerment.
“Healthy Food for Denver’s Kids has transformed how we support families in our city—making healthy meals more available, empowering communities, and ensuring equity regardless of where families live or what they can afford,” Johnston said. “This milestone is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we invest in our kids and their futures.”
According to the city, the program has:
- Reached more than 149,000 families across Denver
- Provided over 40 million healthy and culturally relevant meals and snacks
- Supported educational programming in 33 languages
To celebrate the milestone, the city is hosting a public event on Saturday at the Denver Zoo. The celebration will take place at Zoo Gardens Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Zoo admission is required for entry.
