Good sleep and cutting out junk food are essential for liver health, according to Dr. S.K. Sarin, Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS). Speaking on social media, Dr. Sarin stressed that junk food, rich in unhealthy fats and sugars, harms the liver by increasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
He warned that regular consumption of junk food could eventually lead to severe liver issues like cirrhosis and liver cancer. Dr. Sarin also highlighted the importance of good sleep and avoiding late-night eating, as these habits help maintain healthy gut bacteria, crucial for liver function. Poor sleep and eating late have been linked to increased risks of fatty liver and liver fibrosis.
Dr. Sarin urged people to focus not just on wealth and success, but on maintaining a healthy body and good sleep, calling them the true sources of happiness. In India, about 30% of the population is affected by fatty liver disease, making awareness and early intervention critical.
