Korean authorities have recalled two food products following an investigation into a food poisoning outbreak. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and local officials took action after reports of illness linked to the products. The number of people affected has not been disclosed.
Salmonella was found in two items: the “High Calcium Strawberry Cream Roll Cake” and the “High Calcium Wheat Chocolate Banana Bread.” Both are made by Mother Goose and distributed by a company called Foodmus in English.
The recalled cake, weighing 50 grams, has a best-before date of October 12, 2025. The bread, weighing 22 grams, has a best-before date of September 21, 2025.
The investigation traced the Salmonella Enteritidis bacteria in both the food products and in patients from North Chungcheong Province who showed symptoms of food poisoning. Authorities have ordered a recall and urged consumers to stop eating these products and return them to the seller.
Data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency shows that in 2023, about 600 outbreaks of waterborne and foodborne illnesses were reported, affecting nearly 12,700 people. Most cases happened in restaurants, followed by schools and childcare centers.
Norovirus was the leading cause of these outbreaks, followed by unidentified agents, and then Salmonella.
