Dr. Rob Hopkins, an expert at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, spoke about the new variant and shared advice on how Arkansans can protect themselves.

“This new variant, NB.1.8.1, has been seen in parts of Asia and is now appearing in some large U.S. cities,” Dr. Hopkins said. “It’s not widespread here yet.”

He explained that NB.1.8.1, like other current variants, is a form of Omicron and is closely related to the JN.1 strain. This is the same strain targeted by the current vaccines.

“If you’ve already had the vaccine or get the latest booster, you should have protection against this variant and others like it,” he said. “It lowers your chances of getting seriously ill.”

Dr. Hopkins also warned about the long-term effects of COVID-19. He said long COVID can cause confusion, breathing problems, a higher risk of heart attacks, and even diabetes.

His advice: “If you’re feeling sick, stay home. It’s smart—especially if you’re around someone older or with health problems—to take a test.” He also recommended vaccines for everyone, including older adults, pregnant women, and children as young as six months.

When it comes to travel, Dr. Hopkins stressed layering protections. “The more steps you take to protect yourself, the lower your risk,” he said. He advised wearing masks on planes and making sure your measles vaccinations are current, as measles can also spread on flights.

He added that the MMR vaccine is highly effective: “One dose protects 93% of people from measles. Two doses protect 97%.”

Dr. Hopkins ended with a reminder: “Let’s all stay safe and take care of one another.”
