Pope Leo XIV has appointed Dr. Luigi Carbone as the new Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene for the Vatican City State, effective August 1. The Directorate is responsible for maintaining public health and hygiene within the Vatican.
Dr. Carbone, who previously served as Deputy Director of the Directorate, has also been the personal physician to Pope Francis, accompanying the late pontiff during his illness.
Dr. Carbone takes over from Professor Andrea Arcangeli, who has held the position since August 2020. Professor Arcangeli is retiring this month at the age of 70.
